SVG weeding and layering order: plan the pieces

Use the file’s separate pieces to plan what stays, what is removed and what sits above another layer. A preview colour is not a material instruction.

Identify the pieces before cutting

For a stencil, the sheet left around the openings is the useful part. For a decal, the intended motif is the useful part. A letter’s enclosed centre can be a separate island unless the geometry includes a bridge.

Keep matching layers at the same scale

  1. Use the design page to identify its base, inset and optional details.
  2. Select matching pieces together when resizing.
  3. Lay out the intended stacking order before applying any irreversible finish.
