Brother CanvasWorkspace SVG and DXF compatibility

Brother documents CWPRJ, FCM, SVG, and DXF as CanvasWorkspace formats. They serve different roles: CWPRJ is the working project, SVG and DXF are imports, and FCM is direct machine data.

Keep the format roles separate

Use SVG for ordinary two-dimensional vector artwork. Brother limits the documented DXF route to AutoCAD Release 14 or earlier and CanvasWorkspace 2.5.0 or later.

CWPRJ stores CanvasWorkspace editing information. Brother says the software converts project data to FCM when transferring it to the machine, so raw SVG should not be described as a universal direct-machine format.

Import, review, then transfer

Import the SVG or compatible DXF and confirm that expected shapes are present. Check width and height before arranging the workspace. Save a CWPRJ copy if you need to retain the editable layout, then use CanvasWorkspace's documented transfer process for FCM.

  1. Choose SVG or DXF Release 14 or earlier.
  2. Import and inspect geometry and dimensions.
  3. Save CWPRJ if needed, then transfer as machine-readable FCM.

Troubleshoot the earliest wrong stage

If import fails, check the extension, software version, and DXF release. If geometry is missing, simplify the source to plain paths. If dimensions are wrong, correct the source or set an exact size before transfer.

Name each stage distinctly, such as label-source.svg, label-layout.cwprj, and the transferred FCM output. If a change is needed, return to the earliest editable stage rather than treating FCM as the master. For DXF failure, confirm Release 14 or earlier before changing the artwork.

For a file that opens but looks incomplete, compare visible pieces, zoom into joins, and inspect the full selection boundary for distant fragments. If a 76 mm by 42 mm design has the wrong dimensions, correct the complete imported group with proportions locked and verify both measurements. Save CWPRJ only after geometry and size are correct, keeping diagnosis separate from transfer.

A useful import receipt records the CanvasWorkspace version, source format, intended dimensions, and whether every visible piece arrived. For a 76 mm by 42 mm test label, note both measurements before saving CWPRJ. If another user repeats the workflow, that receipt identifies whether a difference began at import or transfer.
