Basic Edition does not include SVG opening. Designer Edition, Designer Edition Plus, and Business Edition do. Silhouette separately lists SVG saving as a Business Edition feature, so opening and exporting are different capabilities.
If SVG will not open in Basic Edition, repeated SVG exports will not remove the edition gate. Choose a paid edition or prepare a simple DXF.
Use SVG when the edition supports it
SVG is the stronger handoff for curves, groups, and distinct vector elements. Open or merge it, then confirm the imported width and height. A browser preview alone cannot establish the size another application will use.
Convert required text to paths when its exact appearance must travel with the file, and keep a separate editable master with live text.
- Confirm Designer Edition or above.
- Open or merge the SVG.
- Check dimensions and expected geometry before arranging the project.
Keep the Basic Edition DXF simple
The Studio 5 manual documents a bounded set of DXF drawing entities. Do not expect fills, text behavior, grouping, or illustration effects to transfer like SVG. Convert necessary content to basic paths and inspect for missing curves, extra segments, and unexpected scale.
A useful DXF check is a temporary rectangle with a known width. Open the file, select the rectangle, and compare Studio’s measurement. If the reference and design are wrong by the same ratio, correct the export units or resize the complete selection once with aspect ratio locked, then remove the reference.
When handing off a file, state the required edition beside the format: SVG for Designer Edition or above, or simplified DXF for Basic Edition. Keep the source master so lost fills or text can be rebuilt. If SVG is available but imports at the wrong size, inspect its width, height, viewBox, and transforms before manually reshaping it.
If both routes are available, compare them with the same small sample containing a curve, an inner hole, and the known-size rectangle. The SVG result should be judged as SVG and the DXF result as reduced line geometry. Choose the route that preserves the project requirements with the fewest corrective edits.
These conclusions cover software formats. They do not establish a native import observation for a particular asset or a successful machine cut.
